Net reference card

Everything for a net on one sheet: the commands for whoever is running it, the commands for everyone else, what the mesh relay does and does not do, and where the log ends up. Print it and tape it next to the radio.

One sheet. Tape it next to the radio.

Running and joining a net
Type commands in the box at the
bottom of the net room.
chatterback.net/nets/how

Before the netnet control

  1. 1.Open the room once, early in the day. Nets → 💬 net room. The room is created the first time somebody opens it, so this is the step that stops an empty room at start time.
  2. 2./topic tonight’s frequency and what you’re covering.
  3. 3./motd anything a latecomer needs to read on arrival.
  4. 4.Post your preamble, then /pin it so it stays at the top.

Running it

/rollThe check-ins so far, in order. Read it back on the air.
/checkinLog someone who is on the air but not on the site — or let them type it.
/topicChange what the room says you are doing now.
/pinPin a line. /unpin clears it.
/whoEveryone in the room right now.
/mute sam 30mStop someone posting. 10m · 2h · 1d, or blank until you clear it.
/unmute samClear a mute or a ban.

Topic, motd, pin, mute and ban need coordinator rights on the room. If you run a net regularly and don’t have them, ask a coordinator.

After

Nothing to do. The session is archived on its own and appears under Net archive on the state page and at chatterback.net/nets/archive, which is searchable. Ordinary chat is cleared after 14 days; net logs are kept.

Checking ineveryone

/checkinChecks you in. One per night.
/checkin mobile in OwassoAdd where you are or what you’re running. It shows next to your name on the roll.
/rollSee who is in tonight.
/mon 146.940Show what you’re listening to, next to your name.
/me wavesAn action line.
/73 headed outSign off.

Useful mid-net

/find 146.94Look up a repeater or node — callsign, name, town or frequency.
/heard KG5ABC S7Log that you heard a repeater, at that signal report.
/wxActive NWS alerts for this state, shown only to you.
/bandsHF conditions from NOAA SWPC.
/report hail, 41st & YaleA spotter report. Reaches members here, not the NWS.
/msg tom heyA private message. Opens a Direct room.
/helpEvery command.

Mesh traffic in the roomwhere it applies

Where a net has the relay switched on, what is said on the mesh’s public channel appears in the room tagged air, and starts and stops with the net’s own schedule. Lines without that tag were typed on the site.

Only the public channel is ever relayed. Direct messages on the mesh are end-to-end encrypted and are never read, never relayed, and never stored.

The relay is one-way: typing in the room does not transmit on the mesh. Somebody on the air has to say it.

If something looks wrong

Empty roomOpen it from Nets → 💬 net room, which creates it.
No air linesThe relay is off for this net, or nothing has been said on the public channel yet.
/flag sam whyQuietly tells the coordinators. Nothing is posted in the room.
Times in the rail are local to you. A net shows its start time until an hour out, then counts down, then shows a red LIVE badge while it is on the air. Commands are typed in the message box; everything above works there. Full guide at chatterback.net/chat/help.
